Description
Just a short 15 minute drive to the Lamar Valley, our Silver Falls Cabin is tucked into the woods, but close to everything. Travelers comment on how convenient it is to get into the park from Lamar Valley Cabin. One inside, you are minutes away from Lamar Valley, some of the best wildlife watching in the world.
Large, open spaces filled with an abundance of natural light set a cheerful scene for this bright pine cabin. A 1,000 foot addition was finished in Spring of 2016, and was inspired by the the lodges of Yellowstone National Park. This cottage offers rooms with large casement windows on three sides, bringing the outdoors in.
Nestled in the woods, this cabin is famous for watching the bison lumbering through the back yard, and whitetail deer grazing in the meadow behind the house.
The cabin's main floor is an open kitchen and dining room. The kitchen is accented by handmade tiles, a butcher block counter and built-in storage nooks. The large dining room table is great for big family dinners and game night.
A lodgepole queen bed in the first floor bedroom is where early morning light and a view to the meadow can be enjoyed.
A full sized bath with a tiled shower and bathtub are just steps away. Hot water on demand assures no one ever has to cut their shower short.
For the kids...a ladder leads to a loft with two twin futons. Always a favorite spot, it's scaled for kids and is a hideout they are sure to remember. They love having their own space perched above the grown-ups!
A propane heating stove sets a cozy tone with the flip of a switch in the living room.
The master bedroom upstairs is a special getaway. Mountain views, forest views, vaulted ceilings and a private balcony offer a special space to indulge in some well-deserved relaxation.
Down the hall from the master bedroom are the bunk room and second bathroom. The bunk room is a cozy bedroom with two twin bunks. The famous "Wall" mountain can be seen from the bathroom and much time has been spent in the bathtub watching the avalanches roar down to the valley floor in the spring.
Our friendly managers Jess and Tyler are right across the street, so anything extra you may need they can get for you quickly.

Many trips to Silvergate therefore many different lodging options. Have been looking at this for several months and able to find a few nights this April. As others have described this is a very nice property with great owners. Space is at a premium so leave stuff at home you don't need.Jeff did a new deck out front with nice furniture. If youre going out early in the am park the vehicle in daylight so you are headed out thru the trees. The great virtue of Silvergate is that it is close to wolfs in the Lamar Valley. Also this is a much less busy part of the Park and you have the Beartooth Highway just down the road to the East. Fly fishing is easily accessible in the Park and along the Clarks Fork River. Mountains everywhere with Pilot and Index classic spires. So great spot and this property will continue to be popular!
Quiet and cosy is how I would describe the cabin and Silver Gate. We stayed there for 4 nights having returned after a previous stay in 2011. We wanted to see Yellowstone and Beartooth Mountain in different seasons. The cabin has everything we wanted after a full day exploring the park - a full gas stove, fridge, comfortable bed, wi-fi, good lighting for reading, thermostatically controlled heating, hot water and good water pressure in the shower and a barbecue and deck to boot! I barbecued every night on the deck which was very convenient and adds to the overall enjoyment of the day given the setting in the woods. The cabin is very conveniently located close to the north east entrance which is the gateway to the Lamar Valley. I am happy that a few people decided some time ago to put aside this wonderful area so that many can enjoy it today - including humans! We have stayed at many VRBO places and Karen is a gem! She gives confidence when booking and is a warm and compassionate person. We know this from our stay in 2011 when my wife became ill and Karen did everything she could to help. So - with all things considered (no pun intended on NPR show) we highly recommend the Lamar Valley cabins.
We've always stayed near the northeast entrance to Yellowstone in a lodge, but this cabin is a much better option for us: quiet, comfortable, and less than two minutes from the Park. We enjoyed speaking with the owners and one of the highlights of our trip was having Jackson, the bison, in the backyard when we woke up. We loved leaving the cabin in the early morning and experiencing nothing but cool and quiet, and also enjoyed eating lunch on the new deck. Highly recommended!
Used this cabin as a base camp for wildlife photography in the park. This was my 19th season in the park and I wish I had found this cabin sooner. Owners were a pleasure to coordinate with. It was perfect and everything I needed. Less than one minute to the northeast entrance. Even had a black bear roaming around on the property. Cabin is equipped with wifi and all your basic needs can be found across the street or a short drive up to Cooke. Can't beat the location. Will definitely return.
I stayed two weeks in the Lamar Valley small cabin and used it as a base for day trips into the backcountry in Yellowstone and up Lulu and Daisy pass. The cabin was the perfect place to stage those trips; it has all the comforts one needs to recover from a long day in the wintery backcountry; very hot water on demand, a kitchen that allowed me to cook great meals, a very comfy bed and, best of all, no television! It is very quiet. The owners, though i have not met them, were very friendly, helpful and got back to me more than once about questions on the area. I highly recommend the cabin!
We stayed in the small cabin and it was perfect for us. There were 2 of us but the cabin also had two beds in the loft. The cabin has a fully furnished kitchen which we did not use as there was a restaurant across the road. Best of all was that the cabin was clean. It would be hard to get any closer to the Park entrance. We will return.
A lovely cabin. Has all the necessities for a comfortable stay at home away from home, eg fully equipped bathroom & kitchen, 3 seater dining suite, comfy arm chair, Wi-fi & a really comfortable Queen bed. Everything is clean and in good working order. It's only a short walk across the road for decent meal at the cafe/restaurant across the road (thankfully open at 10pm after a long day) and a short drive to great wolf watching spots. Owners Karen and Jeff are easy to talk to, and make it a point to make sure everything is fine. We really enjoyed our stay there! Would have no hesitation recommending this lovely cabin.
We had a wonderful long weekend staying at this Silvergate cabin. The cabin is small, but we knew that it would be. Since we had planned a fairly last-minute trip, we knew our options for a larger space in Silvergate or Cooke City were limited. It is extremely well-built and cozy, nice furniture, very clean when we arrived, and the photos are very accurate. The loft access is easy, and the ladder is very sturdy. No problems accessing it for any reasonably fit adult or older child, and a shorter person can stand up in it. The kitchen area is small, but everything you would need is there (we didn't use it much for such a short trip). The bathroom was also small, but well-built. The internet worked well, although at times it can be fairly slow in the entire area. No cell service, but nice to have a landline in the cabin. The cabin is a great option for a couple, although it is better option for people that expect to be outdoors most of the time. We had quite a bit of rain while we were there, which made us wish it was slightly larger with a woodstove or fireplace (although the heat worked well in the cabin). We did get a chance to see the larger cabin next door, and I will definitely try to stay there on our next trip -- it is equally well-built, but much larger and more comfortable when you need to be indoors. The location was exactly what we wanted, no issues with being right on the main road. A highlight of our trip was driving the Beartooth Highway to Red Lodge and back, and this was the perfect location. The owners were incredibly responsive and very easy to work with. I would stay again and would recommend it -- although the larger cabin was so nicely decorated and spacious that I would stay there first if it were available.
The cabin was perfect for our family of 4. It is located right outside the Northeast gate to Yellowstone, which was perfect for us. We would spend the day in Yellowstone and come back to the cabin for dinner, card games and a movie on the computer. Some of our drives in Yellowstone took 2 hours, just because Yellowstone is a large park. We really liked the long drives, because we saw so much. (Geyers, waterfalls, mountains, wildlife.) We were able to see bison every day, as the northeast gate is right by Lamar Valley. The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed for the week. Karen was very helpful throughout the renting process and gave good tips on what to do in the area and where to buy groceries. Highly recommend driving the Bear Tooth Highway to or from the cabin. It is absolutely beautiful. (It winds up and down the mountains, so the drive can be stressful, but worth it.) Silver Gate is a small community, but very welcoming to tourist. Thank you for allowing us to use your cabin. We are looking forward to coming back to this location soon!!!
Lamar Cabin was great, well constructed, equipped very well, supplied very well, great location (within a mile of the Yellowstone gate), quiet, nice large refrigerator for those extended stays. Would stay again!
This cabin was the perfect place from which to enjoy Yellowstone. The cabin is small but it was plenty big enough for my wife, my daughter and I. The cabin was very comfortable (including the beds). It also had wireless internet, which was really nice and worked like a charm. The owners were very easy to deal with and let us stay 2 nights instead of the mandatory four (Thanks again!!). They gave us great directions on where to shop for food before coming into the cabin. The cabin was very clean (better than many hotel rooms I've stayed at). It was also very well equipped. We cooked both nights that we stayed there and had everything we needed. The cabin is right outside the gates of Yellowstone and a stone's throw from a nice little general store and a small restaurant. Overall this was a very positive experience. I would certainly come back and would recommend this place to family and friends.
Clean & nicely decorated little cabin with all the conveniences to help you enjoy a day in the park and save money by eating in or being able to pack a lunch. We stayed here for 4-5 days to explore the Lamar Valley and some other areas on the eastern side of Yellowstone. Town was quiet & peaceful, yet accepted you as a local.....some very friendly locals were talking about what wildlife they had been observing in the park and were glad to share it with us as we sat across from them at the Log Cabin Cafe. Silver Gate General Store owners & staff were the same way.....all kinds of helpful hints for great views in the park. Karen, the owner of the cabin, kept up good communication with us regarding all details of check-in/check-out, directions, payment, etc. The cabin is small, but nothing was misrepresented in any way. Our 2 teenagers had to learn to live without cell phone reception & tv for a couple of days on their vacation, but their outlook changed within a day of seeing all the amazing wildlife the Northeast entrance has to offer. If you're interested in seeing the wildlife, I definitely recommend renting a scope for at least 2-3 days if not for your entire trip from the Silver Gate General Store....they even recommended a great little coffee place in Cooke City & invited us to the evening campfire for s'mores. If you want a wonderful meal locally, check out the Log Cabin Cafe....especially their pumpkin bread for breakfast or the pan fried trout for dinner. We also had a delicious meal our last night in the park at the Beartooth Cafe in Cooke City. Our cabin had so many little conveniences that we really appreciated.....the freezer so we could freeze our water bottles to keep in our cooler all day for lunch. Someone left behind olive oil, plasticware, paper towels & a few other supplies that we didn't need, but found helpful. Also, having a motion sensor light by the front door helped tremendously as we came home in the dark most every night. Overall, we would recommend this property to anyone who is coming to view the wildlife in the Lamar Valley and yet have a cozy, comfy cabin to come home to every night. Thanks a bunch Hogan family.....it was a memorable stay.
We stayed at the small cabin the week of July 4th. It was one of the best vacations ever. This was our third trip to Yellowstone and have discovered that the entrance by Silvergate is absolutely the best for wildlife viewing and beautiful scenery. In one day we saw bison, moose, bear, wolf, coyote. The cabin itself was immaculate and so well designed and comfortable. The furnishings are great, beds are comfortable. Couldn't have stayed at a nicer place. Thank you Karen and Jeff.
Beautiful cabin with a spectacular mountain range across the road. Silvergate is quiet with a great place to eat at the Log Cabin Cafe across the road. Cabin was clean and modern with everything you need even satellite internet and phone. One morning I awoke to see the bathroom window dark outside but it was a big bison named "Jackson" by the locals blocking the light! The loft stairs are very steep and would not advise sleeping up there, but thats just me. The owner was wonderful to deal with in renting the cabin and will definitely be back to rent for sure.
I have been coming to Yellowstone with my son and two grandsons every year since 1986, have tried almost every lodgeing available and this is the nicest cabin we have stayed in. Very convenient to everything we like to do...hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, taking photograph and just a mile outside the park. Karen was great and we are already looking forward to next year. Will either stay in the same abin or upgrade to the bigger one if more family comes along. I highly recommend giving the Hogans a call.
I stayed at this beautiful place in winter to work on my new book and watch wolves. I come to Yellowstone from Germany since 30 years and stayed in allmost all cabins around. This little cabin is the best I ever stayed in. Very cozy and sparcling clean. Everything works (!) including fast internet and all the lights are bright and at the right place. No tv is perfect for real relaxation. Thanks Karen and Jeff for making this place my second home. Can't wait to be back.
We've visited Yellowstone many times in all seasons and have tried all the lodging options - from tents to hotels to the lodges within the park. Our favorite is the Lamar Valley Cabin. If you enjoy seeing wildlife, Silver Gate is the place to be! We've seen moose walking right down "Main Street" and deer in the yard every morning. Silvergate is also the closest lodging option to the Lamar Valley portion of Yellowstone. The Lamar Valley is often called "The Serengeti of North America". It's the place to be! The cabin is super well constructed, warm, clean, cozy and down-right cute. Having a full kitchen provides welcome breaks from restaurants and allows meals to fit your schedule. The cabin is ideal for a couple or small family. The owners have added a larger cabin too - perfect for larger familes or groups. The rates are very reasonable and I've rarely met nicer owners. Mention their name to any local in Silver Gate and be prepared for a long proclamation of what nice people they are. Better yet, stay at the cabin and find out for yourself!
After many years of spending time in the Silver Gate area we finally found the place we would like to stay forever! This cabin more than met our needs....comfy bed and chairs, full kitchen, working heat and plumbing, bonus Internet and phone (all clean and well maintained)....set in the best location one could wish for. Wildlife right outside the door, the sounds of wind and water outdoors, and stars through the ceiling skylight. Easy access to the best part of Yellowstone and the Beartooths. Add the convenience of some enjoyable restaurants in Silver Gate and Cooke City and you are set to go. Thanks, Jeff and Karen, for building this wonderful cabin that we visitors can enjoy, hopefully for many years to come!
This cabin is wonderful. It is comfortable, warm, and has everything you need to cook some basic meals. We have stayed in Silver Gate at other cabins but this is far better and is now the ONLY place that we will stay for future Yellowstone trips. Unlike other gateway towns, Silver Gate is less than a 1/2 hour to the beautiful Lamar Valley and is a much better place to stay if you are interested in the wildlife which frequents the north eastern part of the park. The cabin is cozy but never felt cramped. It was nice having a large shower with a high shower head and the bed was very comfortable. We couldn't take advantage of the WIFI but that is a great benefit in that area. The cabin even has a phone which Jeff used to call us one night to tell us that two moose were out front. There is a small general store next door and a good cafe (The Log Cabin Cafe) across the street both of which are only open seasonally. As an added bonus, the road through Silver Gate to Cooke City used to be the worst in the area. It is finally paved and is now the best road in the park. If you want to stay in Silver Gate, there is no better place for a small family to stay. Thank you Karen and Jeff for building a great little cabin in a fantastic location.
Comments: I just spent 9 days at Karen and Jeff's cabin and I had a fantastic experience. It is a beautiful cozy cabin. The cabin was exactly what I had in mind when I was planning my stay. It could not have been better! The cabin is minutes from the Northeast Park entrance. If you want to stay in near the Lamar Valley this is the place. Spotless and well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and bathroom shower had great water pressure. And the cabin had WIFI. One morning I woke up and saw a Moose and calf coming out of the creek across the road. A beautiful way to start the day. And night sightings of a beautiful red fox were frequent. Aw, I can't wait to come back! I will definitely rent this cabin again. Thank you Karen and Jeff...see you next year!
The 3 of us just spent a week in Jeff and Karen's cabin, and the experience couldn't have been better. The cabin was spotless, the beds comfortable, the kitchen well-equipped, the hot water plentiful, and the satellite radio a pleasant surprise. Our 6-year old loved having her own loft, we appreciated the quiet and privacy of being set back a bit in the woods, and all 3 of us enjoyed the nightly chats around the fire at the general store and the wildlife wandering around town.
We could have chosen no better place to stay during our Yellowstone trip. The convenience, privacy, coziness and cleanliness of the cabin couldn't be beat. It was a wonderful place to return to at the end of each activity-filled day, and so much more comfortable than a hotel room. As we were travelling with our teenage nephews, the separate sleeping and bunking quarters were ideal. Thanks for sharing your cabin with us; we'll definitely be back! Cathy & Dan Leman
Our family absolutely loved our stay at the Lamar Valley Cabin! The cabin itself fit our needs perfectly. The children had their own space for bed, which they really appreciated. The kitchen was stocked with all necessary cookware to make meals a breeze. And being a fairly new constuction, everything was in great working condition and super clean. The area the cabin is in has so much wildlife near it. We all enjoyed the black bear that wandered around in the mornings and got a kick out of watching a buffalo lumber across the street. The people of Silvergate were very friendly and helpful as well. We've already recommended this cabin to friends and will continue to do so.
Fantastic location by the Lamar valley. We had a Bison outside of the cabin and enjoyed the view of the Mountains off the front porch. The best reakfast in Yellowstone is down the street at the Log Cabin Cafe. Every night we would walk to the general store to sit around the outdoor fire stove. The cabin looked very new and had a warm cozy feeling.
We have been visiting Yellowstone the past 7 years and love the Lamar Valley area. The wildlife, biking and hiking was fantastic. This is our first stay in Silver Gate and it was the best location to date. The cabin was perfect for our type of use - - - love the internet for sharing our photos with friends back home. The cabin was perfect in condition, location and super friendly owners that made us feel at home. We plan on coming back next year and hope to use the cabin - - we took over 2400 photos and will be busy reliving the visit as we pick thru the photos! Thanks for the hospitality and we will stay in touch, Jimmy and Debbie Pryor
This cabin was wonderful for us! To have an affordable place to stay so close to Lamar Valley was such a treat! We were minutes from the park entrance and were able to be in the valley at first light to see the incredible wildlife. When we were done, it was back to the cabin for a hot breakfast and coffee and then out again to hike, take in the sites, and shop. The beds were comfy, the cabin was clean, and was supplied with everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and very enjoyable. The satellite radio was definitely a plus! Thank you, we are looking forward to our next visit!
